Moving around: Trains and the Half-Fare Travel Card

The best way to move around Switzerland is trains! The SBB or CFF or FFS (depends on the language) is the Swiss Rail Association that manages the trains around Switzerland.

Their webpage is very professional, user-friendly and in 4 different languages (English, German, French and Italian). In here you can check the timetables for all the trains, reserve tickets and check promotions. They also have a tab where you can check their weekend getaway promotions to have some ideas for a long weekend in Switzerland!

If you are planning to visit Switzerland this year or do several back & forth between Zurich and Geneva I recommend 100% to buy the Half-Fare travel card (or demi-tarif in French).

What is the Half-Fare travel card?

It is a discount card that allows you to save 50% of all your train tickets. It costs 175 CHF for one year (less if you buy it for 2 or 3 years) there is no age limit and it lasts for 12 months after you purchase it.

Documents required:

  • Debit or credit card
  •  Passport Photo
  • Passport or ID

The half-fare travel card is valid the moment you purchase it! You can buy it in the train station or fill a form online. For more info here.

I hope you enjoy your half-fare travel card as much as I do and let me know which places you visited with it!
